Our CATLINK Open-X review weighs up the everyday appeal

An open tray for larger cats, with a roomy waste drawer and removable cleaning components. We favour its practical approach to collecting waste and making parts accessible for upkeep. Your cat's comfort with the physical arrangement should decide whether that convenience belongs in your home.

Verdict

9/10

Our Open-X verdict puts your cat's access ahead of your scoop

For the bathroom corner where the scoop currently stands guard, the CATLINK Open-X offers a sensible change of routine. We like its open tray, generous waste storage and removable components. Let the appliance take a shift.

Our verdict: We recommend it for mobile larger cats comfortable with an open tray. For easier access, consider the lower-entry UBPet C41, better suited to an older cat because of its lower entrance step.

One caveat The raised entrance is what holds us back: avoid it if your older or stiff cat already finds climbing awkward. A cleaning shortcut should never make the cat's ordinary toilet visit more demanding.

Who it's for

An open litter box for larger cats that can comfortably manage the step

  • Mobile larger cats accustomed to open trays
  • Owners keen to reduce routine scooping
  • Homes with space for cleaning access

This model makes sense for a mobile larger cat accustomed to an open tray, and an owner keen to hand over routine scooping. In a home where the litter tray occupies a permanent bathroom corner, its removable bin and detachable globe help with the remaining chores. Measure the available space before committing that corner.

Less suitable if

Skip this model if your cat strongly prefers a covered tray or the available corner barely accommodates the current tray. It also makes little sense for anyone expecting automatic cleaning to eliminate emptying and washing altogether.

Our scores explained

Every model on the site is scored on the same criteria, using the same scale: its position among models with verified data for that specification. Last place earns 6.5, first place 9.6, and the rest are scored in proportion to their rank. Here is how this model's scores are calculated.

Two model counts: the rank and average include product pages on this site scored for the criterion; the calculation compares the model with all catalogue models whose specification is verified, with or without a product page. A score assigned at publication may remain without a verified specification, so the first count can sometimes be higher.

Waste bin capacity: 9.1/10

CATLINK Open-X scores 9.1/10 on this criterion. Across the 14 product pages on the site with a score for this criterion, the average is 8.1: above average, Rank 2 out of 14.

Detailed analysis

The cat heads for the litter tray just after tea, and you would quite happily let an appliance take the next shift. The CATLINK Open-X pairs an open tray intended for larger cats with automatic cleaning and a generous waste drawer. There is plenty to appreciate in that combination, but the right choice depends as much on your cat's everyday movements as on your enthusiasm for putting the scoop away.

The Open-X automatic litter box accommodates cats up to 15 kg

A larger cat needs a litter tray chosen around their size, rather than whatever happens to fit beside the washing basket. CATLINK describes this open model as intended for large cats, with a maximum cat weight of 15 kg. That gives owners of bigger cats a useful manufacturer limit to work with. Your cat still needs room to use the tray comfortably; weight alone cannot settle that.

The open tray is central to its appeal. Does your cat prefer to keep their surroundings in view while using the tray? This format belongs on your shortlist. We like the combination of an open layout and automatic cleaning for a cat already accustomed to an uncovered tray. Their bathroom need not become a private capsule simply because you would welcome less scooping.

A 12 L drawer gives the Open-X room for the less pleasant bits

The waste drawer holds 12 L, making it a large receptacle for what the cleaning process removes. In practical terms, that may mean longer gaps between emptying, particularly useful when the tray chore keeps colliding with an evening that refuses to organise itself. The scoop rarely checks your diary.

Capacity needs context, though. How quickly the compartment fills depends on your cats and the litter used. A shared tray creates a different routine from a tray serving a solitary cat, so leave room in your plans for checking the drawer rather than treating its volume as a holiday timetable.

The waste bin is removable, which means you can take the collected waste away for disposal. Automatic cleaning can take over part of the routine; somebody still has to carry away the contents. That distinction matters when deciding how much help you actually want from an appliance.

Will the Open-X automatic litter box fit a corner 53,4 cm wide?

The Open-X measures 53,4 cm wide, 58,5 cm deep and 59,2 cm high. Translate those dimensions into the spot you have available: width along the bathroom wall, depth projecting towards your feet, and height beneath any shelving. A corner that currently accommodates a simple tray may need a fresh look before this appliance arrives.

Think about the bathroom on a busy morning, with the laundry basket out and the cat arriving just as somebody wants the sink. Measure the space left for everyday life around the appliance. You also need a workable route for removing the waste bin and handling the detachable globe.

We would mark out the footprint before ordering, then walk through the room normally. A litter box can earn its place by reducing a chore, but it should not make getting to the towels a daily negotiation.

An airtight waste compartment gives this litter tray a clear odour strategy

The stated odour control feature is an airtight waste compartment. Its purpose is easy to appreciate in a flat where the bathroom opens straight onto the hallway: containing collected waste addresses the smell you would rather guests did not meet at the door. We would not turn that feature into a promise of a home without litter smells.

The distinction is between containing collected waste and removing the need to deal with it. That compartment still needs emptying, and the appliance still needs cleaning. For anyone hoping to put the scoop away and forget the whole subject, this is the part of ownership to keep firmly in view.

The detachable globe gives access for cleaning, while the removable bin lets you deal with collected waste separately. Those are practical provisions for the chores that remain. Before allocating the bathroom corner, think about where you will handle those components as well as where the appliance will stand.

A step of 35 cm makes access the deciding detail

At 35 cm, the entrance threshold is high enough to make access harder for an older or stiff cat. This is the physical detail we would put ahead of cleaning convenience. An appliance can take a chore off your hands while still asking too much of the animal using it.

For that situation, the UBPet C41 is better suited to an older cat because its lower entrance step measures 20,3 cm, reducing the climb into the tray. The UBPet C41 has a lower waste bin capacity of 6,7 L, leaving less room for collected waste. That is a clear trade-off, although emptying frequency still depends on the cats and litter.

CATLINK specifies presence detection among the safety features; this is a manufacturer-stated feature, not a guarantee of safety. Weight monitoring is also included; any concerning changes in weight should be discussed with your vet. For a mobile larger cat that prefers an open tray, the Open-X offers a practical combination. Comfortable access must come first.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about this automatic litter box before ordering

Is the Open-X intended for larger cats?

Yes. CATLINK describes it as intended for large cats and gives a maximum cat weight of 15 kg. That manufacturer limit makes it relevant to larger cats, but their comfort with the open tray and its access still matters.

How often will the Open-X waste drawer need emptying?

There is no fixed interval to promise. The large drawer may allow longer gaps between emptying, but the number of cats and the litter used affect how quickly it fills. Check it regularly while establishing your household's routine.

What cleaning do the Open-X waste bin and detachable globe need?

Plan to empty the removable waste bin and clean the appliance, including its detachable globe. Automatic cleaning reduces the scooping routine, but it does not take over disposal or washing. Leave enough room to remove and handle those components.

Which litter and replacement bags should I arrange?

The available specifications do not identify compatible litter types or bag requirements. Before ordering supplies, ask the retailer to confirm the supported litter and suitable bags, including whether any dedicated consumables are required.
